Collection: Hummingbird

This stunning little bird, also known as the purple-crowned woodnymph, though tiny at 10cm long is considered medium in the hummingbird world! It’s found in Central and South America, and this photograph was taken in the famous Monteverde Cloud Forest in Costa Rica. The male bird is larger than the female with a violet crown, upper back, shoulders and belly, a shiny green throat and breast. This photograph is of the female who is slightly less flamboyant than the male, with elegant iridescent green with deep blue patches and a grey throat. They feed on nectar and the occasional small insect for protein. Their call is high pitch and sound like ‘kip!’
